The Last Library

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
Matthew 24:35

How long it had been since the world collapsed into ruins, Merric no longer remembered. It didn’t matter. Survival was all that counted. Each day brought new dangers as he crossed the scorched earth, wandering alone through the wasteland.

He needed food, tools, weapons, anything to keep himself alive. Sometimes he wasn’t even sure he wanted to live. What was the point? Yet death was no better. So he pushed onward, clinging to survival with every step. He had managed well enough so far, though his escapes had been narrow more than once. But to last another night, he needed warmth first.

A small fire barely warmed his freezing fingers. If he didn’t find something to feed the flames, he would likely freeze to death. As he rubbed his hands and scanned the remains of a once-large building, he noticed something wedged between the rubble, half-hidden beneath a large stone.

What was it?

He dropped to his knees and carefully tugged the object free.

It was a book.

A thin smile touched his lips. The paper would keep the fire alive. But as he studied it, he realized it wasn’t just any book. It was a Bible. Even so, warmth mattered more than a lecture on morality.

“Sorry, God,” he muttered, placing the Bible in the centre of the fire, expecting the pages to flare up.

Nothing happened.

He pulled the book out and tried lighting a single page. Still nothing. The flames refused it. Then, as he stared at the page, the words began to glow:

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path

Tears welled as he stared at the unburned Bible. Warmth filled his heart, but more than warmth, his faith was rekindled. God was with him. He did not need the fire. He needed the Word of God. Heaven and earth may pass, but the Word of God endures forever.

Prayer:

Lord, Your Word is precious. Fill my heart with it, that I may be nourished and can share these life-giving jewels with others.
