Jewels of Liquid Light

Moments of Story, Moments With God

The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.
Psalm 119:130 (NIV)

In the beginning there was a King and there was nothing else.

Now the King was steeped in deep silence and in the stillness, there was only purity and love. And yet, the King was not alone in His silence.

His Voice was with Him, faithful and true.

And His Breath moved gently through the stillness.

Whatever the King desired, the Voice declared it and the Breath carried it forth.

Everything was just perfect.

Then the King had a kingly idea. He wanted to give that love away. Share it with others and so multiply that love a thousand-fold.

So, the King spoke and a strange thing happened.

There was light everywhere.

Pure light, and in that light, there was no darkness.

And the King kept on speaking.

Worlds formed. Angels stepped onto the stage.

Mountains rose, seas appeared and stars blazed into existence.

And at last, He created beings.

First, He made creatures that lived in the water, feathered ones that occupied the skies, and creatures with fur that delighted His heart, but that was not enough. His idea was much more advanced. His crowning creation was to make beings in His own image. Beings that were to imbibe the light, treasure it, and feed on it.

Why?

Because through the light they could connect to the King. The light would unite the King to His beings.

And so, the King made a river of living light. A river so vast there would be more than enough light to fill the entire universe with His life-giving light that He wanted to give to His beings; freely, and in great abundance. So that everyone could be united in His purity and love.

But how would the King bring that light to every heart?

The King had long prepared a way.

He told the angels to go to the river of light and He handed them golden ladles. They were to scoop up the light and put it into forms that would harden into words. Jewels, hard on the outside yet inside full of liquid light.

Once the King had a good number of these jewels ready, He instructed the angels to send these words to some of His created beings, called prophets. At one point the King even sent His own Son, His voice, to the world, who came laden with a mountain of those precious jewels, all filled with liquid light.

These words were put in books and scrolls, ready for all his beings. Words, hard on the outside, yet filled with that costly, liquid light.

Now, all His beings had to do was crack those words open so the light would stream out and they would be flooded with light.

How was that to be done?

Those who lingered over the jewels, studied them and considered their shapes, soon discovered something remarkable.

The shell would break open and their hearts would be elevated to the highest heavens. They would be carried to the throne of the King where they were welcomed and they could fellowship with the King in humble awe and gratitude, just as the King had planned.

And the plan worked. Vast numbers of his beings learned to fellowship with the King.

But not all.

The King knew that not every heart would welcome the light. Some would turn from it. They would cover their eyes so all they could see was darkness. Then they would seek to convince others that the King’s light was truly darkness and that their darkness was the true light.

Some of them mocked the words.

Others put them on shelves where they collected dust, or they would crack other words open, words not given by the King, that were filled with other substances that poisoned their minds.

It caused the King great grief. But even for those the King never lost hope.

Because all who truly received the light would be changed by it.

It was His will that the light would bind up the brokenhearted, proclaim liberty to the captives, and open the prison bars to them that were bound.

And that light still shines today; the river of light has not run dry.

The jewels have not dimmed.

The Voice has not fallen silent and the world is still changed by it.

For every jewel that is opened, another heart is brought closer to the King, just as He intended from the very beginning.

Best of all: soon the King who once was alone with only His Voice and the Breath that carried that Voice will live with all His beings for ever and ever in a story that will never end.

The invitation remains.

Will you be there too?

***

Dear Jesus,

Please help me not merely to read Your Word, but to let its light enter my heart. Help me to stop, look and listen until the shell breaks open and I see the light hidden within.

Let Your light transform me into the person You want me to be and draw me ever closer to You.

Amen.
