Fear knocked at the door
Faith answered…
There was nobody there

I was sitting alone at night, safely tucked away in the shelter of my warm cabin. My Bible lay open on my lap, a cup of hot chocolate warmed my hands and my eyes traced the Scriptures. Oh, what joy.

Outside the storm was raging. The wind battered the shutters and howled like a wounded beast clawing at the walls, as if eager to break inside. Yet, within those wooden boards all was warm. The Savior was near.

Then, there was a knock on the door.

Loud and demanding; sharp enough to slice through the stillness in my heart.

Who would be calling at such an hour? An ominous feeling of dread welled up. Danger was waiting outside.

Fear, riding on the wind, had chosen my cabin for its resting place. The terror by night had come to torment me.

Shadows stretched across the floor as the candle flickered wildly. The storm seemed to roar my name, urging me to surrender to dread. My eyes dropped to the page I was on. One verse rose like a lighthouse through the dark: “Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night.”

A promise. Spoken by One who cannot lie.

Faith steadied me. I rose from my chair, every step toward the door a small act of defiance. The wind rattled the handle, but I gripped it firmly. Christ was here. His light surrounded me.

I pulled the door open, and said, “What can I do for…”

There was nobody there.

The wind had vanished. The storm had stilled as if a divine hand had pressed it silent. Above me, the sky stretched clear and endless, scattered with countless stars. They shimmered so brightly they seemed alive, like angels smiling in quiet triumph.

Their silent message settled deep into my soul:

For those who trust in the Lord, there is nothing to fear.

***

I was sitting safe by the fire,
Tired from the world’s muck and mire.
Then someone called my name at the gate,
And I froze; who would be calling so late?
There at the door stood the terror by night,
And my heart was overtaken with fright.
But inside, the Savior gave me His smile:
“I know what to do with one so terribly vile.”
He rose from His seat and He took my hand:
“Together, My child, we will stand.”
And so, we walked onward down the hall
To see if indeed fear was making the call.
I braced for the worst and held on tight,
Trusting completely in my Savior’s might.
Then He opened the door… no one was there,
Only stars overhead, fear gone from the air.
So I learned, when fear pays a visit at night,
There’s no need to worry when Christ shines His light.
